About Marissa Casey, PsyD

Marissa Casey, PsyD

Hello! I’m Marissa Casey. I am a gifted and neurodivergent person (you may be familiar with the terms twice-exceptional or multi-exceptional). I have personal and professional experience with gifted and neurodivergent individuals and families, as well as many of the traits that often accompany these. I am familiar with perfectionism, imposter syndrome, intense empathy, sensory sensitivity, highly sensitive people (HSPs), existential concerns, and feeling you are somehow “too much, but not enough” for others and the world.

Approach to therapy

I believe that neurodivergent and/or gifted individuals need therapy that is specialized to their ways of seeing and experiencing the world. Having a therapist who understands these experiences can make all the difference in moving beyond painful memories and thriving in your life.

I use a combination of different skills, approaches, and interventions tailored to my client’s specific needs and therapy goal(s). Together, we will identify the parts of your unique mosaic of experiences, abilities, and struggles, adding in information, skills, and therapeutic work as needed. This is an ongoing process throughout the therapeutic experience.

I focus on helping my clients develop a deeper understanding of themselves and their unique skills and abilities to cultivate authentic, sustainable interactions with others and the world. I utilize intuition, humor, honesty, and playful curiosity, along with my psychology training, to help you explore, conceptualize, and honor your whole self. I specialize in adapting the interventions to my client and draw from a wide variety of knowledge, experience, and training, including:

  • Using the body’s knowledge and sensory/somatic experiences to inform therapy
  • Mindfulness and meditation
  • Narrative therapies (utilizing writing and journaling for healing)
  • Creative therapies (utilizing art, music, etc. for healing)
  • Knowledge, training, and experience with giftedness and twice-/multi-exceptionality
  • Knowledge, training, and experience with neurodivergent individuals (I am one)
  • Knowledge about highly-sensitive people (I identify as one)
  • Knowledge and experience managing sensory sensitivities
  • Skills from and knowledge of multiple therapy approaches:
    • cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
    • dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
    • cognitive processing therapy (CPT)
    • trauma-informed approaches

Experience and education

I have several years of experience in general practice at a community mental health center, largely at a satellite office located in a rural community. This setting allowed me to work with a wide variety of presenting concerns (trauma, anxiety, perfectionism, communication difficulties, grief, depression, autism/ASD/ASC, ADHD, schizophrenia spectrum, and others), as well as a wide variety of clients.

  • Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology (Forest Institute, 2015)
  • M.A. in Clinical Psychology (Forest Institute, 2012)
  • B.A. in Psychology (Missouri State University, 2009)

During my graduate work I focused my studies on the diagnosis and therapy needs of gifted individuals (including twice-exceptionality).  My thesis and doctoral project were on social and emotional development in gifted youth, utilizing the Theory of Positive Disintegration by Kazimierz Dabrowski.

See more of my work history on my public LinkedIn profile. Note: In order to protect my clients’ privacy, I do not add current or former clients as friends on social media. See my social media policy for more information.
